Southwind farms has been in the Alpaca business since 1998 after Jim and Penny saw an alpaca article in a flyer on a airline heading back from California. We've been breeding, selling and showing alpacas for 16 years and one important aspect that our clients tell us, is how we give them so much information on all phases of raising alpacas. Penny clips articles out of alpaca magazines and makes a folder to give clients before the arrival of their new alpacas with topics such as barn construction, medical issues, husbandry, training, breeding, and other useful information. This was something we never had as new alpaca owners, and we feel there are so many surprises along the way, that anything we can do to help is well worth it. Jim also gives advice on barn construction and will visit a potential client site. Before our alpacas go to their new homes, we try to visit the customer so that we know issues are taken care of. Finding a shearer who will work with small farms can be difficult, so Jim will help our clients line up shearers, and even go with the shearer to help on occasion if needed. We have many events throughout the year, and our alpaca yarn is on sale quite often.
