How to herd your Alpacas
Author: Fancy Fleece Alpacas Marcia Humphrey
When I attended a shearing clinic at Champlain Valley Alpacas, they showed us how one or two people could very easily herd alpacas without a lot of running and arm waving. Since I am often working alone with my animals, this has made a huge difference. Using long pieces of 3/8" or 1/2" PVC pipe, your "arm span" is significantly increased. You just hold the pipe across your body so that it extends out on each side, and then steer and guide with your "extended arms". The pipe is lightweight, inexpensive and readily available at hardware stores. I have several, and keep them stashed in various paddocks.
