I often get asked this and of course the answer is " it depends"! Do they want to make a light lacy garment or a heavy-duty winter warmer? I have found the easiest way is to have some finished hats/scarves etc available made out of my yarn and weigh them for the customer on my fiber scale.

Then compare the weight to the yarn the customer is interested in.

Another great way around this is by having ready-prepared kits available with exactly the right amount of yarn for a pattern that is included (with photo of a finished example).
